Weekend Preview

by Adam - August 25th, 2009. Filed under: Premier League.

The preparations for the third weekend of the Premier League has begun and we will be taking a look at the fixtures and I’ll be predicting an outcome. This weekend we see the first of the big match clashes as United take on Arsenal and new boys Burnley continue their hard start against Chelsea.

Chelsea vs Burnley

The weekend’s early match sees Chelsea take on Owen Coyle’s Burnley. Burnley are the surprise package this season beating Man United and Everton at home already.

Chelsea are going well and have won all of their matches so far. Not only that but they have deserved the win in all of their games although they left it late against Hull.

I want to say Burnley will do it again but I really don’t see it and one thing I can see is the Blues getting another 3 points.

Prediction: 2-0

Blackburn vs West Ham

Blackburn have been unlucky not to get anything from their opening two games and big Sam will be wanting his side to get their first points of the season against West Ham.

The hammers were extremely unfortunate not to have got atleast a point against Tottenham at the weekend and they are looking a pretty good side, I think that they will come away with a point.

Prediction: 1-1

Bolton vs Liverpool

Bolton are another side sitting down at the bottom with no points, again like Blackburn they have been unlucky not to get any. They are a good side and tough to beat at home but are they strong enoug to beat Liverpool?

Liverpool have lost two of their three games and they seem to be lacking the precision and ability of Alonso, I think that they will struggle against Bolton’s physicality, especially Torres.

I think Bolton could pull a surprise against the Reds as they struggle for form.

Prediction: 2-1

Stoke vs Sunderland

Stoke’s home form is really what kept them up last season and they have started this season fairly well picking up 4 points so far.

Sunderland have started excellently on the other hand, two good wins and a loss against Chelsea. They beat Norwich in the Carling Cup 4-1 aswell which will give them a real boost.

I think that this will be a close match but I think a goal for Stoke will seperate the two.

Prediction: 1-0

Tottenham vs Birmingham

Tottenham have enjoyed a blistering start and that has taken them to the top of the table and are looking like a fantastic squad. They destoryed Liverpool and Hull and then narrowly beat West Ham.

Birmingham have done well to get 4 points so far, a late penalty got them their first win against Portsmouth last week and they have done well in their matches and confident to push on and make themselves safe.

I believe that Tottenham will win this rather comfortably with Jermaine Defoe on top form

Prediction: 2-0

Wolves vs Hull

Wolves have started well and are unfortunate to only have 3 points to their name. Games against the likes of Hull, Birmingham and Burnley are the games they will have to win to stay up.

Hull too have 3 points and they won their first home game of 2009 and that may give them the confidence they needed to push on and get some more wins under their belts.

I think that this will be a no score draw.

Prediction: 0-0

Man United vs Arsenal

The biggest match of the season so far. This fixture isn’t as big as it was 5-6 years ago but the sides will desperately want to win and put their mark down on the title.

United bounced back emphatically against a tired Wigan, running out 5-0 winners at the DW stadium and that will encourage them to push one. All front-line strikers were on the score sheet too.

Arsenal have scored 10 goals already in only 2 games but I don’t think that they can replicate that against United’s strong defense. They will be confident though having got a draw here last season, incidently that was the match that won United the title.

With Rooney in form, Owen and Berbatov scoring at Wigan I am finding it hard to see how the Arsenal defense will not concede. Nani is also looking good and will be a threat.

Cesc Fabregas is out for the encounter and that will weaken their creativity but one thing with Arsenal is you expect them to create chances and the United defense will need to be strong and disciplined to keep them out.

I think United will come away with a victory.

Prediction: 3-1

Portsmouth vs Manchester City

Portsmouth are looking in major trouble of being relegated early on unless they defend better and create more going forward. The side have had to sell most of their decent players to avoid going bankrupt and are still not sure of their future.

City are going well with two wins and you can see them scoring quite a few against the fragile pompey defense. Tevez has yet to score for them and will be hoping to open his account.

Prediction: 0 -4

Everton vs Wigan

With Lescott out the Everton dressing room should be more concentrated and should perform better on the pitch. They have look like a mid table side in their recent fixtures but they are better than that.

Wigan started well against United at the weekend but once one goal went in that was it. Their head drops and it turned into a rout which did them no favours.

I expect Wigan to come away the spoils as Everton try to get going.

Prediction: 0-1

Aston Villa vs Fulham

Villa got their first points away to Liverpool and will be wanting to improve on their medicore home form over the past few seasons if they want to push up the table.

Fulham were dominated by Chelsea and will be happy that they only conceded two goals against the potent strike force.

I think that this game will be a score draw.

Prediction: 1-1
